Chlorhexidine Antiseptic Action

  • Chlorhexidine is effective on both gram positive and negative, although some gram negative bacteria have resistance.
  • The bactericidal effect is a result of the binding of this cationic molecule to negatively charged bacterial cell walls. At low concentrations of chlorhexidine it has bacteriostatic effect while at high concentrations, membrane disruption results in cell death (bactericidal effect).
